//hard business truths #14. nothing moves people to action like FOMO

Here’s the uncomfortable truth about human psychology – we’re more motivated by what we might lose than what we might gain.

You can spend hours explaining how amazing your product is, but show someone what they’re missing out on? They act immediately.

Loss aversion is real and it’s powerful. People will work twice as hard to avoid losing 100 pounds than to gain 100 pounds. That’s why FOMO works so well.

Look around you. “Only 3 spots left in this program.” “Sale ends at midnight.” “You’ll always struggle with relationships unless you fix this.”

Netflix does this perfectly – “Leaving soon” gets more clicks than “New arrivals.” Apple’s limited edition releases create lines around the block. Tesla’s “reservation only” model had people putting down deposits on cars they’d never seen.

Even Spotify Wrapped works on FOMO – you don’t want to be the person who can’t share their music stats.

But this only works if there’s real scarcity or genuine consequence. Fake urgency backfires. People smell BS from miles away.

The ethical way to use this? Be honest about real limitations. If you only have 10 coaching spots available, say it. If your early bird pricing genuinely ends Friday, stick to it. If delaying a decision actually costs them money or opportunity, show them the math.

Don’t manufacture fake scarcity. Create real value that’s naturally limited.

The most powerful FOMO isn’t about your product – it’s about time. “Every day you wait to start that business is another day your competitor gets ahead.” “Each month without proper systems costs you thousands in inefficiency.”

Make the cost of inaction crystal clear and you’ll sell much more.
