Is it only me, or it’s been a new wave of spammy, salesly emails lately (feels like 400% increase in the last 2 months)?
To the sales guys: if you’re using AI-aided outreach platforms, you should ask your money back, because it’s not working. Most of the emails I get are way too long, too robotic (if you use GPTs yourself, you know one to spot one) and plainly irrelevant.
So to save you time and dignity, here are things you should do instead when writing your cold emails:
1. Show that you care – make it about them, not you. Find out their pain points of your prospect and provide a solution. Answer “What is it for me” question.
2. Don’t waste time – time is money – both yours and theirs. Research the person you’re reaching out to and write an email that makes sense to them. Or don’t write one at all. Mass spraying and praying rarely works. It’s not worth the effort.
3. MAKE SURE IT’S RELEVANT – I may sound like a broken record but this one is extra important – make sure that the offer you’re making is relevant to your audience. Because if it’s not, they’re not going to waste any time in replying.
4. Do not demand attention if you haven’t earned the right – who are you that I should give you 30min of my limited time? Provide value first, but don’t spam them with heavy corporate decks unasked. If the other person is interested, they’ll get back to you. Don’t chase them with endless follow-ups (1-2 are fine, but they should be phased over).
5. Include only ONE, clearly defined call to action.
Ideally, you should minimise cold emailing and instead, focus on building inbound reach. You could use Linkedin and community platforms that you own (e.g. start a newsletter) where you can share your learnings, without shoving your sales pitch down someone’s throat. Make them come to you.
